　　达摩，天竺人，禅宗二十八代佛祖。是把禅学带入中土的第一人。他为弘扬佛法东渡中土历尽艰辛，后终在少林寺后山面壁九年得悟大道和高深武艺。其经历充满传奇性和戏剧性。达摩到中国弘法大乘佛教之时，正值南北朝的分裂时代，社会治安极差，民心凋敝，原有的佛教教理偏重于追求个人名利，趋附权贵，造成世风日下，道德观念也愈来愈难以发挥制衡作用。达摩行医济世，遍施爱心，在下层百姓中广结善缘，引起共鸣。他救助了面临被焚噩运的麻疯女小婵，在日久相处中小婵对达摩由感激而生爱情，给修心性的达摩带来不小的历练。北魏国师流支三藏巧于言辞，善于为高官大户说经乞福，他以说法传扬自己，一时名声颇盛，因而对达摩的声誉鹊起心怀嫉恨，遂进谗言于南梁君主梁武帝，使梁武帝对达摩这个乐于厮混民间，不先至皇宫拜见的和尚产生很大误解。又加之达摩为救助病势沉重的小婵差点误了梁武帝的召见，听信身边佞臣之言的梁武帝未能接受达摩“大爱的道理”。达摩带来的全新禅理激怒了抱残守缺的大臣，他们伺机以诡计加害达摩。遂将达摩困于一地牢之中，以火焚之，达摩临危若定。突围至长江，面对滔滔江水和凶猛的追兵，以一束苇草为舟飘然渡过彼岸，众人大惊疑为神仙。达摩一路来到北魏，继续寻找师傅指引的可以弘扬大道的地方，流支三藏发现嵩山少林寺颇似达摩所说的地方，为阻止达摩修行，火烧少林。是夜突降罕见的大雨，少林寺因而无恙。达摩看到寺前的两株桂树，顿然明白他已经找到修行弘法的所在。在少林寺的修行依然历经磨折，达摩教众人练武以求强身健体。练武之事竟惊动太子，太子希望与达摩精研禅理，流支三藏怕危及自己的国师之位，又起害达摩之心。他令人教唆小婵初谙男女之事，用以诱惑达摩，幸而达摩灵智不泯，决心到山洞中面壁，斩断情孽。达摩面壁九年，对禅学佛理和武功都有了更深的彻悟，而流支三藏对他的五次陷害反成就了大师的功德。达摩把自己的所悟所得耐心地传给大弟子小宝。少林寺住持慧光感于达摩的功力，主动让出宝座给达摩。达摩主持少林寺，开始了中国禅宗的兴起。达摩经多方考验，收神光为徒，改名慧可即禅宗二祖。达摩觉得已完成了在中土弘法的大业，想返回久别的故国，他知道百姓和弟子们不舍他离去，就乘机假做中毒不治，溘然化灭。灭渡二年后，有人见到只穿着一只芒鞋的达摩…… 再查看棺中果然无尸。达摩祖师只履西归的佳话传遍天下，流支三藏竟震惊得跌落山谷而死。
